International literacy day: transform your learning space

Transforming literacy learning spaces will be the theme of International Literacy Day 2022, with a focus on the role of educators and adjusting teaching techniques. This could include things like creating a reading corner in your classroom or making a space for your class to get creative with their writing.

We have created multiple ways in which you can transform your classroom into a literacy learning space

How to celebrate international literacy day

You might like to discuss this topic with children and have an extra focus on writing and reading skills. You could ask them to imagine what life would be like without the privilege of being literate, and how having the ability to read and write empowers children and adults in terms of their education, career prospects and other pursuits.

Additionally, you may invite them to write a creative essay, evaluate one of their favourite books, or read aloud a narrative. They might create their own bookmarks or book covers for something creative. To get them thinking, suggest a word search or get them to list their favourite writers or genres.

Perhaps your class could take part in a fundraising event like a bookish bake-off for a literacy charity or donate a book. This would be a great way to get children involved in helping others.

Creative writing space

When you think of the perfect writing space, what comes to mind? Is it a desk with all the proper materials? Is it a dedicated room or area for writing or is it more of an idea, a way of life? Here at Hope, writing is encouraged throughout the environment and what’s around us.

Similar to planning for a reading space, you want to think about the flow of the space and what your intentions are.

As always, we suggest starting with a blank slate. Empty the area and start to build your space. Make sure you clear out your space and ensure everything you want to add, fits into your designated area. Think about the size of the children and the way you want the space to be used. You also need to consider how you want them to be able to access the materials.

When setting up a writing space, you do not have to add in EVERY kind of writing paper and EVERY writing tool. Instead, start simple, rotate materials, and encourage a variety of writing experiences.

Create a reading corner

Wanting to organise your reading corner? You’ve come to the right place. Whether you have an existing corner that needs a revamp, or you want to create a new one, these simple tips will have your pupils excited to read.

International Literacy Day falls in one of the first weeks back at school in September. This makes it the perfect opportunity for your class to engage in a whole range of literacy tasks to celebrate reading and writing.
