Natural tree decoration

Go out into nature with your class to create a natural tree decoration this festive season. Christmas crafts don’t have to be complicated and can use little materials but still look amazing. This craft uses natural materials arounds us that can be repurposed into some easy fun for pupils.

Follow Katie Taylor’s step by step guide to create this natural tree decoration with your class. Katie is an EYFS teacher & forest school leader. Check out her Instagram which has achieved over 155k followers and ever growing, for more inspirational ideas for the outdoors.

Step 1

Gather some sticks of varying lengths (around 12 in total) and roughly 1cm-2cm thick.

Step 2

Lay out your sticks in size order, placing the shortest at the top and the longest at the bottom. Leave around 3cm-4cm space between each stick. See image below.

Step 3

Cut two long pieces of string, roughly 3 times the length of the tree laid out. Tie the first piece at one end of the longest stick and keeping a distance of 3cm-4cm. Tie a further knot on the stick above, repeating until you reach the top stick. Do this again on the opposite side, ensuring the string is the same distance on each side. Tie the two pieces together at the top to create a loop, this is for hanging your tree up.

Step 4

Now it’s time to decorate. You can decorate with bells, beads, nature, or wooden decorations. Tie decorations on using wire or string.
