Valentine’s day crafts for your class

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and what’s a better way to celebrate love than crafting? We have teamed up with two teachers to bring you some Valentine’s Day crafts for your class. Follow these ‘how to’ steps with your pupils and use them to decorate your classroom ready for Valentine’s Day.

Children can have fun with getting creative designing Valentine’s hearts and cards however they want. Ensure to have plenty of crafting materials and spread the love through crafting.

Valentine’s hearts

Our friend Sheila at @rascals_and_rainbows has created an amazing and simple Valentine’s heart crafts that children can get creative with. Follow these easy steps and let pupils go crazy with how they decorate their hearts. These are perfect to display in the classroom to decorate it for the big day.

Step one

Place heart shape tin (or any heart shaped item) onto a sheet of paper and draw the outline around the tin. Cut along the lines of the heart to have the heart shaped paper.

Measure the width of the heart to see how many strips you can cut out and how far apart they should be.

Step two

Draw straight lines vertically down the heart leaving the space you have measured between each line. Cut along these lines with scissors to make multiple slits along the heart.

Step three

Choose 6 different coloured pieces of paper and put them together. Draw lines to create thin strips on the piece of paper at the top. Cut along the lines ensuring all pieces of paper are straight so the strips are equal in all colours.

Step four

Weave the strips of different coloured paper through the slits on the heart. Make sure to assist children if needed or show them how to weave as this can be tricky. Once done, the heart should look like it has different coloured squares on it.

Step five

Cut the ends of the coloured strips and glue down the parts that hang out of the slits to finish it off. Let children decorate the heart with a bit of glitter or draw patterns on with felt tips. Doing this lets them be creative and makes every heart different.

Valentine’s cards

It can’t be Valentine’s Day without making some cards to send to loved ones and to even display in the classroom. This is one of the most creative Valentine’s activity for kids as they can have free reign on how they decorate their handmade card.

Our friend Veena has created some amazing Valentine’s Day cards with her class to inspire your card making session.

Step one

Choose a coloured piece of paper and fold in half lengthways to create the card. Make sure that it is folded straight so the crease isn’t wonky to have the perfect card.

Step two

Paint the card either with a different coloured background with a large brush or paint a border with a finer brush. Children can even Paint hearts on or anything they choose that reflects Valentine’s to them.

Step three

Now for the fun bit! Decorate the card however you want. Use felt tips to draw and glitter and gems to finish the card off. Allowing children to be free with what they do puts their individuality first as every card will be different. Plus, this way it is made with love.

Step four

Write a message for loved ones in the card so your pupils can take them home and pass them on for Valentine’s Day. Get children to make some spare cards that you can hang up in the classroom to go with the heart crafts ready for the day.

Heart suncatchers

Another simple fun craft from Sheila is these lovely heart shaped suncatchers that pupils will love to make. Put the finished craft in your classroom windows and see the sunlight pour through, a perfect addition to you valentine’s day decorations.

Step one

Place the heart tin or heart shaped object onto a piece of coloured card. Draw the outline around the object with the pencil. Cut the heart shape out following the pencil outline.

Step two

Pierce the middle of the heart with scissors and begin to cut the middle of the heart out. Once done you should have a thick outline of a heart with nothing in the middle.

Step three

Place the heart shaped tin or object onto some sticky back plastic and draw the outline onto it. Cut around the outline.

Step four

Peel the back off the sticky back plastic and stick to the card heart outline so that it fills the middle.

Step five

Choose an assortment of colours from your tissue paper pack and cut into squares. Glue onto the middle of the heart on top of the sticky back plastic. Decorate with gems and glitter to finish them off.

Step six

Stick on the classroom windows and watch the sun shine through the heart. See the different colours light up and keep them there as decorations for valentine’s day.

Try these fun and simple Valentine’s Day crafts for your class and let children be as creative as they want. Spread the love through crafting and discuss with your class what they think love is whilst making them. Show them that a little kindness, thought and love goes a long way when they are making their creations. You could even discuss how these little things can make a loved one happy as well as the value of kindness to one another.
