World Ocean Day – Shell Treasure Ornament
Our brand ambassador Early Years Outdoor shows us how to turn treasure you have found at the beach from the ocean into beautiful hanging keepsakes with just a few resources. This is a super easy craft for little ones and is perfect for hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, building up ocean themed vocabulary and discussing textures.
What you’ll need:
- Shells, rocks or jewels
- Clay
- Clay tools and mats
- Ribbon
- Optional extra: seashore pebbles for imprints
Step 1
Collect all of the resources you will need and set up for the children. A base board is a good idea to stop clay from transferring to the tabletop.
Step 2
Provide a small piece of soft clay for each child. With a child friendly rolling pin, roll out into a thickness of at least 1-2cm. If it is too thin, once it dries it will crack and break.
Step 3
Using a clay tool, make a small hole near to the top of the rolled-out clay. This will be for the ribbon later on.
Step 4
Press shells/treasure into the clay gently so that they stick. If you are using seashore pebbles, press the pebbles to create the pattern into the clay too.
Step 5
Thread ribbon through the small hole and tie. Hang up or leave flat to dry.
Step 6
You could seal with pva glue to make it last longer.
Step 7
Once dry, display your beautiful hanging beach treasure ornaments for everyone to see.
