The Big Schools’ Birdwatch – Enter our competition

Get your school involved with the Big Schools’ Birdwatch this winter. The Big Schools Birdwatch runs from the 6th of January – 20th of February 2023 and is the ideal activity that gets your class closer to nature.

What is the Big Schools’ Birdwatch?

The RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch is a citizen science project for schools across the UK. It takes place alongside the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. It’s easy to get involved, and most children are excited to participate in this important research. And what a perfect way to get pupils involved and working together. This activity is about counting the number of birds on your school grounds. It only takes an hour, so one lesson or lunchtime is ideal.

Why not use this as an opportunity to teach children about the UK’s incredible variety of native bird species?

There’s no need to prepare for the Bird Watch, but if you want to get ready early, you could put up a bird feeder to attract more birds to your garden, giving it a clean after each refill. The RSPB also recommends that you don’t tidy your school garden up too much over winter, making sure there are plenty of seeds and berries available for wildlife to feed on during the cold months. It’s also good to leave out fresh water and keep it ice-free.

Thank you to Ms Sohal’s class at Wellow House School for taking part in the birdwatch. They had some great photos!
