Menorah Hanukkah Craft

23 Oct 2024 | Inspirational Activity Ideas, Nursery and Early Years

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is a joyful celebration filled with light, music, and family traditions. It’s a perfect opportunity to bring cultural education into an early years setting or home, allowing children to explore and understand the significance of this important holiday.

One of the key symbols of Hanukkah is the menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum that holds eight candles, representing the eight nights of Hanukkah, and one central candle called the shamash, used to light the others. Crafting a menorah is an excellent way to introduce young children to this cultural symbol, while also enhancing their fine motor skills and creativity.

Take a read of the steps below to make your own Menorah for Hanukkah celebrations.

Menorah craft supplies

Step 1

Prepare the menorah base by painting four craft sticks yellow or gold. Then let them dry completely.

Step 2

Give the children around nine craft sticks each. Have them paint the sticks blue and red. Afterwards, leave the sticks to dry for a few minutes.

Step 3

Once the sticks are dry, help the children glue or tape the nine sticks onto the yellow/gold craft sticks.

Step 4

Using the yellow card, cut out small flame shapes that will sit on top of each craft stick. Assist the children in gluing these flames onto the top of each “candle.”

Step 5 (optional)

If you’d like to take it a step further, children can decorate their menorahs with additional items such as stickers, glitter, or sequins to make their menorahs even more personalised.
