Exploring the World: Senegal
Our first country we’ll be looking at is Senegal!
Where is Senegal?
Senegal is a country located in western Africa and is known as the “Gateway to Africa.” This is because it is served by numerous air and maritime travel routes. The capital of Senegal is called Dakar, a vibrant city where you can find lively markets and historical architecture.
What Language is Spoken?
Senegal has a variety of ethnic groups including the Wolof and Fula, and many of these groups have their own languages. There are over 30 languages currently spoken in the country, with Wolof being the most common, but French is the official language.
Food
Senegalese cuisine is not only influenced by their ethnic groups but also by European nations such as France and Portugal and North Africa. Additionally, fish is very important in Senegalese cooking as they border the Atlantic Ocean.
Thieboudienne is known as Senegal’s national dish. This is a fish and rice recipe flavoured with tomato sauce and steamed vegetables such as carrots, aubergine, and sweet potatoes.
Culture and Traditions
Senegal is known for its West African tradition of storytelling, which is commonly done by griots. A griot could be a poet, singer or even a historian who acts as an oral storyteller of traditional African myths, legends, and historical figures.
The Senegalese also play many sports and football is considered as one of the most popular sports in the country. In 2002, a national holiday was declared when Senegal beat France 1-0 in the World Cup. This was also their first time participating in the World Cup!
