Where is Mexico?
Mexico is situated in North America which borders the United States. It is the third largest Latin American country and is known for its natural biodiversity, rich cultural heritage, and varied climate. The capital is Mexico City, which is the oldest capital city in the Americas. Mexico is a popular destination for holidays and is one of the most visited countries in the world.
What Language is Spoken?
Spanish is vastly spoken by much of the Mexican population and has the most Spanish speakers in the world. A small portion of the country also speak indigenous languages such as Mayan and Aztec languages. There are several food-related words used in English today that derive from the ancient languages of Mexico such as chocolate, avocado and tomato!
Food
Mexico is known for its delicious food, and their cuisine is enjoyed by people all over the world. Although cuisine varies depending on the region, the staples of Mexican food are corn, beans, and chili peppers. Tortillas are a popular staple food and are used to make some of Mexico’s most popular dishes such as tacos, fajitas, and burritos.
Culture and Traditions
Mexican culture is full of life and colour! Family plays a big part and hosting parties is a common occurrence. One of Mexico’s biggest festivals is the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), where families celebrate loved ones who are no longer with them. People will set up altars and leave offerings like the favourite food for their departed loved ones. There might also be parades, with people wearing vibrant costumes and painting their faces like skulls!
Also, music is an important part of Mexican culture. One of the traditional genres of Mexican music is mariachi, which is a type of folk music. Mariachi musicians are often found performing at family celebrations such as weddings and birthday parties.
