Where is Portugal?
Portugal can be found in the southwest of Europe in an area called the Iberian Peninsula. This is also where Spain is located, which borders mainland Portugal. In addition to the mainland, Portugal also includes the island Madeira and the Azores. These areas are known for their idyllic landscapes and nature.
Lisbon is the Portuguese capital, a bustling city filled with lots of history and stunning views. Additionally, the Algarve is a popular region in the country. It’s known for its beautiful beaches and laidback way of life which has made it a major tourist destination.
What Language is Spoken?
Portuguese is spoken throughout the country, but there are also multiple Portuguese-speaking countries dispersed around the globe. For example, other countries that speak Portuguese are Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. These were all previously part of the Portuguese Empire.
Food
The food in Portugal can vary by region, from rustic and hearty meat dishes to a variety of seafood. Primarily based on a Mediterranean diet, Portuguese cuisine also draws influence from the spices of Africa, the Americas and India.
Bacalhau, which is the Portuguese word for cod, is known as the national dish and one of the staple foods found in Portuguese cuisine. It is widely said that there are 365 different ways to cook bacalhau, one for every day of the year!
Additionally, the sweet treat pastel de nata is considered one of the most famous foods in Portugal. Pastel de nata (custard tart) was created in Lisbon by monks in the Belém district before the 1800s and is now enjoyed throughout the country.
Culture and Traditions
Portugal has a charming and vibrant culture. Art, sport, religion, and family are all important aspects of Portuguese life.
One of Portugal’s most widely recognized art forms is Fado music. Fado is a traditional type of folk music that is known for its melancholy melodies and expressive lyrics. It focusses on topics such as working-class life, love, and nostalgia.
As well as the arts, the Portuguese are very much into sports, and they especially love football! Football is the most popular sport in the country, and they are very passionate about the game whether they are playing it or watching it. Portugal is also the birthplace of one of the most famous football players in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo. He is the captain of the Portuguese national football team and has played for clubs such as Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United. He is also the first person in the world to reach 500 million Instagram followers!
