School Activities: Pancake Day Recipes
Pancake Day is just around the corner! Why not whip up a bunch of pancakes with your class to celebrate the day on the 1st of March, using our pancake day recipes?
Use our easy-to-follow pancake recipe to create the best school activity for your class. We have created a step-by-step guide that you can all follow with some tips on how to make them extra tasty too.
Delicious and colourful rainbow pancakes
Create scrumptious and stunning pancakes with your class by using gel food colouring to make a stack of ordinary American pancakes into the colours of the rainbow! The children will love getting hands on in creating these, especially when it comes to the messy part of adding the colouring to the mixture.
What you’ll need
- 200g self-raising flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp golden caster sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 200ml milk
- 3 eggs
- 25g butter, melted, plus some extra to fry with
- Rainbow colours gel food colouring- red, purple, yellow, green etc
These measurements serve four people and creates around five pancakes for each person (one of every colour). If you want to create more double everything up!
Step one
Mix all the ingredients together with a whisk in a large bowl (except the food colouring). Whisk until smooth. Divide the batter into five separate bowls adding the food colouring to four of the bowls whilst leaving one plain.
Step two
Melt a small bit of butter in a non-stick frying pan. Make sure that it is set at a medium-low heat. Once bubbling, pour spoonfuls of the mixture into the pan and shape into large circles with the back of the spoon. There should be enough mixture to make four batches of each colour!
Cook each pancake for 2-3 minutes before flipping over to the other side for an extra minute or until they are cooked through. They should be slightly golden in colour.
Step three
Pile the pancakes on plates, ensuring everyone gets one of each colour. Serve with strawberries for decoration and drizzle some golden syrup on top to make them extra tasty.
Additional toppings you can use to make these pancakes perfect
- Ice cream for the top of the stack
- Blueberries
- Chocolate spread
- Lemon juice
Create extra fun pancakes
Why not take these rainbow pancakes an extra step by turning them into animal shapes? You could get the class to turn the pancakes into a lion, caterpillar, or dog to allow the children to be as creative as they want.
To create a lion, make one large pancake and one small one. Put the large one on the plate and the small one on top of the larger one near the bottom. Decorate with berries for eyes, chocolate chips for a mouth and strawberries for nose and mane. Place the strawberries around the large pancake on the plate to create the lion’s mane.
For making a caterpillar, pour in tablespoons of the mixture to cook. This will make the pancakes extra small. Make Do around 6-8 tiny pancakes. Place them on the plate from right to left (left being the head). Overlap the pancakes in a wave like format to create the caterpillar’s body. Decorate with berries underneath the lower pancakes to create feet. Chocolate chips for eyes and some lemon rind for antennas.
To turn the pancakes into a dog, cook one large pancake, one small one, and two oblong pancakes. Put the large pancake on the plate with the small one on top of it near the bottom. Lift the large pancake at each side to slide the oblong one’s underneath it, this will create the floppy ears. Use chocolate chips and berries to create the features of a dog.
